On January 17, 2024, Crunchyroll unveiled the nominees for the Anime of the Year award, and notably, Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters doesn’t get Anime Of The Year Nomination. Surprising many, it failed to secure a position among the six anime considered for recognition at the forthcoming 2024 Anime Awards ceremony.
The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is an annual celebration devoted to acknowledging the outstanding craftsmanship and innovation within the realm of Japanese animation. It applauds accomplishments in animation, music, and performances, spanning a spectrum of anime delivered through streaming or in theaters. This year commemorates the eighth installment of the awards ceremony.
Attack on Titan Doesn’t Get Anime Of The Year Nomination
On January 17, 2024, Crunchyroll disclosed the nominees across its awards program, spanning 25 categories. Among these, the prestigious Anime of the Year award stands out.
The nominees for the award were as follows:
- BOCCHI THE ROCK!
- Chainsaw Man
- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc
- JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2
- 【OSHI NO KO】
- VINLAND SAGA SEASON 2
Notably, Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters did not secure a nomination, despite the heightened anticipation surrounding its 2023 finale, as indicated by the Anime of the Year award nominees announced by Crunchyroll. While fans might perceive this exclusion as unjust, it arises from the specific criteria established for the voting process of the awards.
Judges were constrained to nominate anime that had aired at least one episode on television or online in Japan between October 2022 and September 2023. Although Attack on Titan could have met this criterion. The conclusion of the voting period on October 17, 2023, proved to be a decisive factor.
The first episode of Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special Episode 1, released on March 4, 2023, met the eligibility criteria for consideration. However, the special episode 2, premiering on November 5, 2023, fell outside the voting period. Consequently, with only one of the two special episodes qualifying before the deadline. The judges may not have deemed Attack on Titan worthy of nomination for the award.
Interestingly, considering that the special episode 2 was released in November 2023. There remains a possibility of it being considered for nomination in the 2025 Anime Awards.
