Having left a significant mark in Hollywood, Parasite director Bong Joon-ho is now venturing into the realm of anime movie, as he revealed during this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
It’s astonishing to realize that four years have passed since Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite claimed the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. With notable works like Snowpiercer, The Host, and Okja preceding it, Bong had already solidified his position as a mastermind in genre filmmaking.
While Parasite catapulted him into the mainstream, introducing many audiences to a vibrant new cinematic world, following up on such success is undoubtedly challenging. Nevertheless, Bong has been diligently working on several projects since then. His upcoming live-action film, Mickey 17, featuring Robert Pattinson, is set to release soon. Having previously confirmed his foray into animation, he has now disclosed another venture—an anime movie set in Japan.
Parasite is Working On An Anime Movie
During the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Bong Joon-ho disclosed his active involvement in the development of an animated movie in Japan. Making the announcement as a prelude to presenting the Anime of the Year award, he mentioned that he had been working on the project just the day before.
While no further details were provided, the revelation itself is quite thrilling. Despite not having a background exclusively in animation, Bong has previously tackled effects-heavy films like Snowpiercer and Okja. Although animation is a different realm, there is an evident crossover in terms of appreciation for the craft and understanding the artistic process across various disciplines.
Bong Joon-ho’s entry into the world of anime holds the potential for something truly captivating, particularly if he collaborates with esteemed studios such as MAPPA or Studio Bones. It’s noteworthy that he already has another anime film in progress in South Korea. Currently, it remains unclear whether these projects are connected or if he is exploring a broad range of ideas in the developmental phase.
