how to repair trident in minecraft

Tridents are strong and versatile weapons in Minecraft, capable of dealing damage both up close and from a distance. Introduced during the Aquatic Update, they’ve become a rare and highly prized tool in any player’s collection. Because crafting them isn’t possible, knowing how to repair a trident in Minecraft is crucial if you plan to use one long term.

Why Tridents Need Repairing

Each trident has a durability of 250. Every use, whether a throw or melee hit, uses up one point. If it breaks, it’s gone for good. Since the only way to get a trident is by defeating a drowned mob, which only occasionally drops one, keeping it repaired becomes essential to avoid losing such a rare item.

How to Repair a Trident in Minecraft with the Mending Enchantment

The most efficient and long-lasting method of repair is through the mending enchantment. When Mending is applied, the trident begins to repair itself automatically as you gather experience points, as long as it’s equipped in your main or off-hand.

To get Mending, you’ll need a Mending I enchanted book. This can’t be created at an enchanting table. Instead, you can find it by fishing, looting structures like chests, or choosing to trade with villagers. Once obtained, place the trident and book in an anvil to apply the enchantment. From then on, every XP orb you gather will go toward restoring the trident’s durability.

Trade with Villagers for Mending Books

A consistent way to get Mending books is to trade with villagers, particularly librarians. You can create a librarian by placing a lectern next to an unemployed villager. After the villager accepts the job, they will offer a random enchanted book. If it’s not Mending, you can break and replace the lectern to refresh their trades.

Once the villager offers Mending, buy the book immediately to lock in the trade. The option then becomes permanent. With a supply of emeralds and books, you can collect as many Mending books as you need, not just for your trident but for your full set of tools and gear.

Use an Anvil to Combine Tridents

If Mending isn’t available yet, another way to repair your trident is by combining two damaged ones using an anvil. This process restores durability and retains any enchantments already on the weapon. If the tridents aren’t enchanted, this option is low-cost. When combining enchanted items, however, it costs more experience, and it may not always be worth the price.

Keep in mind that each anvil use adds to the repair cost of the item. Over time, this means repairs will require more XP, and eventually, the game will mark it as too expensive to fix further using this method.

Avoid Using Grindstones for Enchanted Tridents

Grindstones can also merge tridents, but they strip away all enchantments in the process. For that reason, using a grindstone isn’t a good idea if your trident already has valuable effects. It’s only useful if you want to clear all enchantments and start over with a clean weapon.

XP Farms Help Repair Tridents with Mending

Once your trident is enchanted with Mending, experience becomes its repair source. To speed things up, visit XP farms like mob spawners, auto-fishers, or even smelting setups. Just keep the trident in hand while collecting XP. This ensures that the Mending enchantment directs the orbs to automatically fix the trident.

Using an XP farm while holding a Mending trident is one of the fastest ways to restore its full durability, especially if you’ve been using it constantly in combat.

Keep Your Trident Safe and Strong

Understanding how to repair a trident in Minecraft helps you protect one of the game’s most powerful tools. The mending enchantment, supported by XP farming and trading with villagers, makes the process simple and efficient. Until you have Mending, combining tridents on an anvil remains a solid backup option.

Whichever repair method you go with, keeping your trident in good shape guarantees you’ll always have a dependable weapon, whether for underwater battles, ranged strikes, or calling lightning during storms. A fully maintained trident is one of Minecraft’s strongest and most valuable assets.
